Helping Those In Need

On September 23, 2023, my life took a profound turn as I had my first experience helping to feed the homeless. This day, etched into my heart, was a testament to the transformative power of compassion, faith, and community.

The day began early, with a sense of anticipation and excitement mixed with a tinge of nervousness. I joined a group of like-minded individuals in preparing meals for the homeless. As we unwrapped the cheese, put condiments on the bread and built each meal package, the basement was abuzz with camaraderie and a shared sense of purpose. It struck me how the act of preparing food for those less fortunate could be an act of love and a way to manifest God’s grace.

As we ventured out onto the streets to serve the food we had prepared, the reality of the homeless crisis became starkly apparent. The faces of those we served carried stories of hardship, struggle, and resilience. Through the simple act of offering a meal, we were able to share a moment of connection and humanity. In their eyes, I saw a reflection of God’s presence, reminding me of Christ’s words, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Following our street outreach, we gathered for a Holy hour of Adoration. The silence and serenity of the Sister Poor of Jesus Christ room provided a space for reflection and communion with God. In the stillness, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to serve and a realization that it was through this service that I could draw closer to God.

Later in the day, we engaged in a talk on God’s calling. It was a chance to explore our individual journeys of faith and discernment. Listening to others share their experiences, doubts, and moments of clarity, I understood that God’s calling is often a whisper in the heart, a gentle nudge toward a life of purpose and service. This day had become a part of my own discernment journey, a calling to continue to serve those in need.

The day culminated in a Vigil Mass, where we came together as a community to celebrate our faith. As we received the Eucharist, I felt an overwhelming sense of unity with the homeless we had served earlier. We were all part of the body of Christ, bound together by our shared humanity and faith.

Looking back on this day, I am reminded of the profound impact that simple acts of kindness and service can have on our lives and the lives of others. It was a day filled with love, faith and a deeper understanding of God’s presence in the world. My first experience helping to feed the homeless was not just an event; it was a journey of the heart that has inspired me to continue to follow God’s calling and serve those in need.
