Giving Thanks

On October 7, 2023, I had the privilege of celebrating my first Canadian Thanksgiving Dinner with some close friends and our beloved priest from the church. This experience was a beautiful blend of faith, gratitude, delicious food, and joyous fellowship.

Our celebration began with a choir rehearsal. The harmonious voices filling the church set the tone for a day of thanksgiving. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and prepare our hearts for the Mass that would follow.

The Holy Mass that followed was a truly special part of the day. Gathered as a church family, we offered our thanks to God for His countless blessings. The priest’s homily reminded us of the importance of gratitude and how it can deepen our connection with God. The Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith, was the perfect way to express our gratitude to the Lord for His abundant grace and love.

After Mass, we gathered for a festive Thanksgiving dinner. The table was beautifully set, and the aroma of the meal filled the room. We enjoyed a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving feast, complete with a succulent turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, savory Brussels sprouts, freshly baked bread, tangy cranberry sauce, and hearty stuffing. The desserts were equally delightful, featuring cannoli, double chocolate cake, pumpkin pie, and my friend Josh’s famous brownies. The abundance of delicious food reminded us of the bounty we have been blessed with.

Following our meal, we took a moment to reflect on our blessings. Each of us shared words of gratitude and raised a toast with apple cider, a symbol of the harvest season. It was a touching and heartfelt moment, as we expressed our thanks for the gift of friendship, faith, and the love that bound us together.

To continue the festivities, we engaged in games like broken telephone and charades. Laughter filled the room as we tried to decipher one another’s messages and acted out words and phrases. These games added an element of fun and camaraderie to the evening, reinforcing the sense of togetherness and unity.

In the end, my first Canadian Thanksgiving Dinner was a beautiful experience that deepened my appreciation for the importance of gratitude, community, and faith. It reminded me of the blessings we often take for granted and the joy of celebrating them with loved ones. It was a day of togetherness, thanksgiving, and the warm embrace of friends and faith, making it a truly memorable and cherished occasion.
