On the memorable evening of November 4, 2023, I had the privilege of attending the Dinner Bread and Wine event at St. Joseph Portuguese Parish, a gathering that transcended mere fundraising and became a celebration of faith, community, and transition. This event held a special place in our hearts, not only as a means of supporting Cursillos de Cristiandad Hispanic Retreats but also as a poignant farewell to a dear friend embarking on a new journey in a different city.
The evening unfolded with a soul-stirring choir rehearsal, echoing the sentiments of Psalm 100:1-2: “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.” Our voices intertwined, creating a melody of unity and anticipation for the divine moments that awaited us.
The apex of the night was the Holy Mass, where the bread and wine took on a profound significance. As we participated in the Eucharistic feast, the words of Jesus in Matthew 26:26 resonated deeply: “Take and eat; this is my body. Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” The sacramental elements symbolized not only Christ’s sacrifice but also our communal bond as the Body of Christ.
Following the Mass, we gathered to celebrate the graduation of one of our members in the program of Spiritual Direction. This transition on her career brought to mind Jeremiah 29:11: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” It was a reminder that God orchestrates our paths, guiding us toward new roles and responsibilities within the spiritual journey.
As we transitioned to the dinner portion of the evening, the tables adorned with bread and wine became a symbol of abundance and community. The fellowship shared around these tables echoed the overflowing grace and goodness of God. The live band and DJ added a joyful rhythm to our evening. The open dance that ensued became a joyful expression of our gratitude for the time spent together and a fitting farewell to a friend embarking on a new chapter of his life. As we embraced the bittersweet moment of departure, we recognized the importance of seasons changing and the faith that accompanies new beginnings.
The Dinner Bread and Wine event, with its fusion of gratitude, celebration, and farewells, became a testament to the richness of our Catholic community. It embodied the idea that even in transitions, God’s plan unfolds, and our journey continues with the assurance of His providence and grace.
